Ph.D. Study Programs

The aim of doctoral programs of study is to train and prepare the new academic staff with special concern for research in legal science. The graduates of these programs have the potential to become university teachers in their relevant specialized areas of law.

Profile of graduates of doctoral programs of study

Ph.D. graduates will have mastered the methods of research in legal science with special focus on the branch of law of their choice. They are expected to analyze the general and special issues in their relevant fields according to proper methodological and scientific standards, and to make their own generalizations and conclusions, pointing out also to some practical implications.

Ph.D. graduates must have the potential to explore the current and new issues, looking for new approaches in dealing with the issues as justified by theoretical and scientific purposes, as well as legal and political practice.

Ph.D. graduates are expected to summarize scientific knowledge in a broader context of law, anticipating also some practical implications.   

As the theoretical and practical tasks in scientific research may be closely related to similar topics in the political science, sociology, philosophy and economics, the Ph.D. graduates are expected to attain the determined or planned goals and tasks based on a multidisciplinary approach.

 

Conditions for PhD study - foreign students

Form of study: part-time – in English - 5 years study

At the Faculty of Law of the Comenius University, applications for full-time and part-time study are submitted separately.

knowledge at the II. level of the university education in law

The Faculty of Law of the Comenius University offers the doctoral study in accordance with the decision of the Accreditation Committee of 9.9.2009 in the following study majors:

Only law graduates of the second level of university studies can be admitted to the third level of university studies.

Form of the entrance examination: Oral exam (each applicant must take part in the oral exam)

  • The fee cannot be returned if the applicant cannot sit for the entrance examination.
  • Incomplete applications will be disregarded.

Fee for study:

€ 3,000  for one academic year

(1.-4. year of study)

€ 1,500 for academic year

(5. year of study)

Evaluation of the entrance examination:

The committee determines the order of successful candidates by secret voting, taking into consideration

  • grade average,
  • English competence, or German competence,
  • participation in scientic or academic activities,
  • availability of tutors and possibilities of the faculty,
  • quality of the project of PhD. Thesis,
  • result of the oral exam.

The application shall be supported by:

  1. a curriculum vitae,
  2. notarised copies of university diploma and citizenship. The applicant who is applying to the postgraduate study at the faculty of the Comenius University from which he had graduated with a master´s degree, shall submit a copy of such university diploma. The applicant who is applying to the postgraduate study at another faculty of the Comenius University than from which he graduated, shall submit a copy of the diploma together with the original for verification by a designated officer of the Students Office.
  3. a list of his published articles or other outcomes of expert or artistic activities, or reviews of these works and activities,
  4. proof of payment for the entrance examination,
  5. applicants from the EU countries and the Slovak applicants who studied at foreign universities shall also submit a Decision on recognition of qualification, or Confirmation of the equivalence of qualifications. (the decision/confirmation is issued by the competent state agency – www.ksuba.sk, or by the Ministry of Education of the Slovak republic – www.minedu.sk.) This does not apply to the applicants from the Czech republic.
  6. a preliminary 3 – 5 page project setting out the topic of the dissertation.
