Department of Criminal Law, Criminology and Criminalistics

The Department of Criminal Law, Criminology and Criminalistics (“the Department”) guarantees and provides a number of compulsory courses, selective compulsory courses as well as elective courses within the master's degree programme. As for the compulsory courses, the Department offers the following ones: Criminal Law I and Criminal Law II (Criminal Substantive Law) and Criminal Law III and Criminal Law IV (Criminal Procedure). There are two selective compulsory courses offered by the Department, too: Criminalistics and Criminology. Furthermore, the Department also provides courses on forensic scientific disciplines, such as Forensic Medicine, Forensic Engineering, Forensic Psychology and Forensic Psychiatry. In addition to this, the Department also provides its students with elective courses taught in English – Introduction to Slovak Criminal Law, International Criminal Law, European Criminal Law and International criminal law moot court competition.

In terms of the number of its members, this Department is one of the largest departments within the Faculty of Law of Comenius University. This is primarily due to the fact that all students have to pass one of their state exams from criminal law. Taking and passing criminal law courses is necessary both for completing the law studies at the Faculty as well as for future practising lawyers since it is required within further qualification exams in order to become a particular legal practitioner. The Department can also be proud of its excellent publication activities. Moreover, its members have already taken part and still take part in a number of scientific projects.

Our Department has also been cooperating with several practising lawyers having criminal law expertise. Members of the judiciary, prosecutor's office and members of the Police Corps deliver lectures on criminal law, are members of state examination board and get engaged in scientific and publication activities whereby the students can become familiar with not solely the theoretical aspects of criminal law but also the practical ones.
