History

The Department of Labour Law was established in 1965 under the title Department of Labour and Agrarian-cooperative Law. This title had Department until turn of the 1989-1990, when it was renamed on Department of Labour Law and Social Security Law (hereinafter as “Department”). Before the establishment of the Department was the tuition of the courses connected with Labour Law ensured by the Department of the Administrative Law and Labour Law. Before this the courses connected with Labour Law had been taught by the members of the Department of the Civil, Family and Labour Law or by the Institute of the General Private Law.

 From its establishment, the Department was fully used and it provided tuition of the courses connected with Labour Law, Agrarian-cooperative Law, Social Security Law and many other courses which were related to the abovementioned courses. In the field of the Labour Law, the research activities were aimed at the legal status of the employee within the Labour Law relations. In the field of the Agrarian-cooperate the scientific activities of the department were orientated on the research of the convergence of the agriculture and industry in the field of labour relations and social security.

 The fist Head of the Department was world respected expert on Labour Law and Administrative Law prof. JUDr. František Mestitz. He was replaced by the equally significant personality of the Labour Law and Agrarian-cooperate Law and Social Security Law prof. JUDr. Jaroslav Filo, CSc., who was the Head of the Department for many years. Prof. JUDr. Juraj Kolesár, CSc. was appointed as a Head of the Department after Prof. JUDr. Jaroslav Filo, CSc. in 1982. Prof. JUDr. Helena Barancová replaced Prof. JUDr. Jaroslav Filo, CSc. in 1991. During the years 2000 to 2010 was the Head of the Department Doc. JUDr. Ján Matlák, CSc.. JUDr. Michal Kuril, PhD. was Head of the Department since 2010 until 2014 and was replaced by doc. JUDr. Juraj Hamuľák who lead the Department the years 2014 until 2021. JUDr. Pavol Rak, PhD. was head of the Department in years 2021 till 2024. Since 2024 the Head of the Department is doc. JUDr. Lenka Freel, PhD.

The significance of the Department as scientific-research institution and as one of the fundamental and essential organizational units of the Faculty of Law of the Comenius University in Bratislava is proven also by the fact that many members of the Department held important posts at the self-government of the Faculty of Law and Commenius University, e. g. vice-rectors, deans, vice-deans, chairmen of Academy Senate etc. Prof. JUDr. Jaroslav Filo held the function of the Dean of the Faculty of Law for the longest period in its history. He was Dean of the Faculty for nearly 14 years.
