Department of Roman Law and Ecclesiastical Law
The Department of Roman Law and Ecclesiastical Law (“the Department”) was established on 1 March 2015 in accordance with the decision rendered by the Dean of the Faculty of Law of Comenius University in Bratislava. Until then, Roman law, Ecclesiastical Law and Canon Law courses were taught under the Department of Legal History. The current Department continues in the tradition of the Department of Ecclesiastical Law which was established at the turn of the years 1989/1990 and which was cancelled in 1998.
The major courses taught at the Department, i.e. the Roman Law and Ecclesiastical Law, represented one of the first courses taught within the so-called history and law section of the teaching programme introduced at the newly established Faculty of Law of Comenius University in Bratislava in 1921. Many significant teachers from the Department of Ecclesiastical Law who worked at our Faculty as professors eventually became its deans or even rectors of Comenius University and they therefore got involved in the development and progress of our Faculty as well as the University, e.g.:
- Prof. JUDr. Otakar Sommer (dean from 1924 to 1925; rector from 1926 to 1927)
- Dr. h. c. prof. JUD. Karol Rebro, DrSc. (dean from 1946 to1947; rector from 1949 to 1950)
- Prof. JUDr. Peter Blaho, CSc. (dean from 1991 to 1994 and from 1994 to 1997).
Nowadays, there are teo professors, one associate professor and three assistant professor working at the Department. Apart from the compulsory two-semester courses of Roman Law I and Roman Law II, the Department also offers its students a wide range of other selective compulsory courses and elective courses which have become quite popular with students (Case Interpretation of Roman Family Law, Case Interpretation of Roman Property and Contractual Law, Ecclesiastical Law, Case Interpretation of Ecclesiastical Marriage Law, Practical Course of Ecclesiastical Law, Confessional Law, Canon Law, Material Sources of Law, etc.)
