International law
The field of Habilitation and Inauguration "International Law" mainly includes the following segments in the area of international law (science of international law) and in the area of education in the field of study “Law”:
- public international law
- private international law
- European Union law
- the legal orders of other integration groups
- international law protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms, including protection within the institutional framework of the European Union
- the impact of international law and European Union law on the domestic legal order, including a comparative approach,
- the relationship of international and European Union law to other branches of law.
International law regulates relations between entities with international legal personality (public international law, European Union law), as well as relations (with a foreign element) between entities of a private law nature (private international law, European Union law).
Sources of international law can significantly interfere with domestic law, in particular by establishing rights and obligations for natural and legal persons, often taking precedence over domestic law. Equally important in this sense are the sources of European Union law, which contribute significantly to the overall shape of the legal order of the Slovak Republic. Lastly, private law relations that transcend borders, the number of which is constantly increasing in connection with the deepening of cooperation at both international and European Union level, should not be overlooked.
The object of examination of European Union law is the relations created by the Treaty of Paris, the Treaties of Rome and their successive amendments, including the Treaty of Lisbon, which, on the basis of the institutions of international law, have created a specific legal order of a supranational character.
The interdisciplinary relations taken into account within the field of "International Law" include, in particular, international relations, international trade, the organisation of international organisations, including the procedures for the application of international law by these organisations.
