The Institute of Clinical Legal Education (“the Institute”) is a newly created, interdisciplinary department promoting the clinical legal education at the Faculty of Law of Comenius University in Bratislava. Clinical legal education represents an educational programme implemented at universities which is based on an interactive and reflective method of education. Its primary objective is to provide the university students with theoretical as well as practical knowledge, practical skills and system of values in accordance with professional ethics. This form of legal education enables the students to gain practical legal experience and skills already during their studies. Moreover, it enables them to gain critical and analytical thinking skills and the students are thus better prepared for their professional future practise. The development of clinical legal education is an important part of the development of progressive and modern legal education. Its goal is also to increase the quality of educational process and thus the quality level of graduates of the Faculty of Law of Comenius University. Thanks to the clinical methods of teaching, the students are able to understand the relationships between individual areas of law and they are able to understand the real nature and meaning of legal terminology and legal institutes already during their studies and thus gain better orientation skills within the legal rules. The courses offered by the Institute are taught while using the clinical method of teaching and the Institute also takes patronage over the Summer School of Legal Skills which is organised annually.
